Legally, you need to pay your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (IRS Form 2290) before the end of the month following the month you place the vehicle in service.
For example - If you place a new vehicle on the road in September, then you have until the end of October to pay and obtain the schedule 1. (However, most states will not allow you to register or plate your vehicle without the schedule 1)
Another Example: Your 1 July 2014 filing for your 2014-2015 filing period is NOT due until 31 August 2014.
The IRS form 2290 year is from July thru June of each year.
